Job Description

Marketing Director

(Is this the most interesting mission-driven marketing job in Austin?)

Interplanetary Help Desk is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that produces benefit concerts for other nonprofits. We help great causes raise money while supporting music venues and musicians. It’s a game-changer in nonprofit fundraising – and a ton of fun. We’re bringing people together for joyous nights of social connection.

We need a creative and experienced BtoC marketer who can:

  • Build and execute marketing plans for 2 dozen concerts being promoted simultaneously
  • Aggressively grow our Instagram, email, and SMS lists
  • Work with nonprofit partners, sponsors, and creators on mutually beneficial promos
  • Manage on-brand creative
  • MAKE NOISE FOR A GOOD CAUSE

It’s an interesting role. You’re executing local social media and email campaigns to sell out the shows. At the same time, you’re working on audience development, because big lists and follower counts grow our ability to promote.

Plus, in our unique model, the nonprofit is responsible for promoting the event to their supporters and community. So we need to balance our efforts with helping our partner do their marketing. If we do it right, our partner’s community follows us, too.

Which means we can raise more money for more great organizations, while creating inclusive community events that bring the city together. Our goal is 100 shows every year, supporting 250 non-profits, and giving paid gigs to hundreds of artists.

This is a hands-on execution job: Small team and a lot of DIY/guerilla work. (We do have budget and great software powering things behind the scenes.) Show us you can manage the messy overlapping tasks and processes with a lean crew of staff and freelancers.

We have a mission-driven product, a respectful work environment, and a marketing process that deeply values relationships. You show up with a low-ego, high-impact mindset, always focused on what best serves the mission and strengthens the team and community.

You can read more about our model at interplanetary.org .

Your Job: Sell out concerts and build followers so we can raise max money for charity

  1. Concert Marketing: Build and execute marketing plans for 2 dozen concerts being marketed simultaneously, with an emphasis on top-of-funnel awareness.
  2. Work with Partners: Leverage our nonprofit partners, content creators, music industry organizations, media, etc., to expand our reach. Know how to connect, inspire, and coordinate the people we work with.
  3. Audience Development – Build our Database: Maximize social media followers. Capture opt-in emails and phone numbers. Manage the platform and campaigns.
  4. Project Management: Run the marketing flow. Manage the calendar/schedule, execute each step, measure results. Coordinate across web, social, email, paid ads, etc.
  5. Manage the Creative Process: Work with external and internal designers and writers to create content for each concert (art, social media, email, web, etc).
  6. Manage the Parent Brand: Manage our web site, marketing materials, newsletters, and BtoB marketing content. Understand our brand design framework and improve it.
  7. Measure and Report: Analyze results of all marketing and concerts, align to the marketing budget, and create great reports for our team and partners.

Your Skills:

  • Process management. You know how to get the right things done in the right order, and can manage dozens of simultaneous small campaigns.
  • Work with designers and writers. Find and manage creative partners, creating a network of people we can count on who love to work with us. Coordinate and manage content across all programs and be hands-on in the writing/editing process as needed.
  • Maintain brand standards and a brand system. Sophistication around branding, messaging, content, and design. You know how to enforce consistent on-brand messaging and design.
  • Understand the concert marketing ecosystem. You don’t need to come from the live music industry, but show us how you’ll master the unique nature of promoting shows.
  • Basic creative. You are a strong writer who can do content in-house, so we’re not 100% dependent on outsourced partners.
  • Power user of marketing tools. You are a strong user of web platforms (WordPress or SquareSpace), email/SMS/CRMs (Klaviyo, etc), design tools (Adobe, Canva). We don’t expect you to be a technical admin, but you know how to use these platforms in a sophisticated way.
  • Power user of social media, email, and SMS. You are experienced running professional campaigns in a sophisticated way.
  • Proficient with the tools and techniques of a modern workplace.

Other Thoughts

We know that we need a complete overhaul of our brand, design, and website. That’s a priority that you’ll help lead. Note: AI design is not OK in the live music community.

We LOVE to collaborate (in an unusually intense way that makes some people nuts). So much so that you should enjoy having a group of talented creatives giving feedback and working as a team to make everything we do truly excellent.

What we don’t need: A concert promoter who is focused on one-off shows. An influencer who is promoting themselves. This job is about building a great music and fundraising brand that can do maximum social good.

Some Important Details

This is an in-person job in Austin, 80% in the office. Our work is very local and hands-on. It’s mostly daytime in the office, but everyone will support our concerts some evenings. No remote/hybrid options.

How to get this job: Submit an application at interplanetary.org. We want to see a great cover letter, resume, and anything else that shows us how you write, think, and work. Show us what you've done and how you can do it for us. Include samples of your work.

Compensation: This is a nonprofit startup with mid-range salary, healthcare, and more benefits coming soon. Compensation and benefits will grow as we grow. Based on your experience level, this could be a manager, director, or VP role with compensation appropriate to the level.

What it's like to work with us

We’re building a high-performing, intense, high-energy workplace that lets you do astonishingly good work every day. And we balance it with healthy work policies that send us home, on time, to our families and personal lives. We don't know it all, but we're figuring it out together and having a great time doing it.

You'll like our team. We only work with people we like, people who care, and people devoted to the cause. There are no office politics, whiners, slackers, or jerks. (We also reject customers and partners that don't treat our employees well.) We are dedicated and driven — and you'll enjoy spending your days with us.
