Chief Medical Officer (CMO)

Employment Type: Full-Time

Work Arrangement: On-site

Compensation: $255,000 – $345,000 annually

Position Summary The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the senior physician executive responsible for leading all clinical services across the organization. This role provides strategic direction, ensures high-quality patient care, drives clinical excellence, and oversees medical staff and clinical operations. The CMO works closely with executive leadership to advance organizational goals, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and support continuous quality improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Executive & Strategic Leadership
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.

Contribute to organizational strategy, growth, and long-term planning.

Develop clinical strategies aligned with mission, vision, and strategic priorities.

Evaluate opportunities for new clinical programs and service expansion.

Represent clinical leadership in executive decision-making.

Present clinical performance and strategic initiatives to leadership bodies.

  • Provide executive oversight for all clinical departments including medical, dental, behavioral health, optometry, chiropractic, and additional service lines.

Establish evidence-based standards of care and clinical practice guidelines.

Promote integrated, team-based, patient-centered care.

Ensure delivery of high-quality, culturally responsive healthcare.

Lead with cultural humility and competency.

  • Maintain a patient panel and provide direct patient care as appropriate.

Balance clinical responsibilities with administrative leadership.

  • Quality, Patient Safety & Population Health
  • Lead Quality Improvement and Clinical Performance programs.

Chair the Quality Improvement Committee.

Improve clinical quality metrics, patient outcomes, safety, access, and experience.

Drive initiatives in value-based care, preventive care, chronic disease management, and population health.

Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement.

  • Medical Staff Leadership
  • Provide leadership for all providers including physicians, advanced practice providers, psychologists, optometrists, dental and chiropractic directors.

Conduct coaching, mentorship, and performance evaluations.

Support physician leadership development and succession planning.

Promote provider engagement and collaboration.

  • Credentialing & Clinical Governance
  • Oversee credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes.

Ensure compliance with licensing, certification, and competency requirements.

Maintain strong clinical governance and accountability.

  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Lead regulatory readiness for audits, accreditation, and compliance programs.

Oversee clinical policies, protocols, and standards.

Partner with compliance and risk teams to reduce clinical risk and enhance patient safety.

  • Collaborate with Operations to improve clinic efficiency, patient access, and workflow optimization.

Align clinical priorities with financial and organizational goals.

Use clinical data and performance metrics to guide operational improvements.

  • Support workforce planning and provider recruitment.

Foster professional growth, collaboration, and engagement across clinical teams.

  • Community & External Relations
  • Represent the organization with community partners, healthcare networks, and educational institutions.

Build collaborative relationships with hospitals, specialists, and external stakeholders.

Promote organizational mission through outreach and partnership development.

Required Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).

Active, unrestricted medical license (or ability to obtain before start).

Board Certification in a recognized medical specialty.

Minimum 8 years of progressive clinical leadership experience.

Demonstrated success in quality improvement, clinical operations, and provider engagement.

Strong cultural competency and commitment to equitable care.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in community health, safety-net healthcare, or integrated delivery systems.

Familiarity with HRSA compliance, FTCA, PCMH, and value-based care models.

Bilingual proficiency strongly preferred.
